Down to San Antone

(By way of Atlanta that is. Isn't that how Johnny Cash would have gone?)

Well, I'm close to assuming my role as (co)Chief Resident pretty soon. In order to get ready I went down to San Antonio for Chief Resident Charm School a couple of weeks ago. Katie was able to go with me and we had a great time in between my meetings and such. We went with my co-chief, one of the rising Med/Peds chiefs, and the coordinator, director, and associate directors of the UT Peds program. We did learn a lot about our new role as chief, but also a lot about real margaritas. And check out the massive Bloody Mary that Katie got. We flew in on a Tuesday and threw our stuff down as soon as we got there to walk to the Market Square area to eat at a place called Mi Tierra. It was delicious and authentic. We walked along the River Walk back to our hotel afterwards. We stayed at the Marriott Rivercenter, which is right on the River Walk and also where our conference was. The following day was a long day of meetings, but we celebrated that night at Luke, an awesome place by an apparently well known chef, John Besh, from Louisiana. I had the best shrimp and grits I can ever remember. I almost must say that absolutely everywhere had Shiner Bock on tap, and as we were only 80 miles away from Shiner, it was actually an improvement on something already so great. The next night we dined with some old UT friends on the Riverwalk at Paesanos, an Italian place on the River Walk with an incredible shrimp dish. We actually had some time off during the morning on that day and went and did some sight seeing at the Alamo. We didn't have time to go inside, but we walked along the grounds, which were beautiful and impressive in their own right. We got Drew a Bowie knife and a coonskin cap that he has not stopped playing with since we got home. Our last night there we rented a car and drove to nearby outlet shops where we spent way too much money on a lot of cool stuff. After we were done shopping we found a great little bar and grill in San Marcos where I met Jack Daniels. We also had a couple of lunches out on the River Walk, mostly more Mexican fare. The other pictures below are ones that Katie took during her free days she had while the rest of us were busy meeting. I didn't take a bunch of other pictures because no one else was really taking them and I didn't want to be that guy. There's Saint Anthony, for whom the city is named; Tower of the Americas, the tallest building in the city which also has a restaurant on top; and also a scene on the River Walk. It was a nice city, really clean, and the River Walk was great. And I guess we learned a little bit while we were there too.
