Brinkley Heights Urban Academy

Yesterday I had the opportunity and privilege to tour Brinkley Heights Urban Academy where my friend Jason Cox works. He showed me around the school of about 70 students while it was in full swing. It was very exciting to see the kids so eager to learn and be at school. You may have heard about this school and ministry on Rosamond in Memphis. They have been featured in the Commercial Appeal, Action News 5, and most recently the Union University Annual Report. They provide an affordable private Christian school education to at risk children in this inner city neighborhood. Their vision is becoming realized as they are in the process of building a beautiful new school as they continue to add on grades. They aim to raise strong Christian men and women who will go on to college and come back and establish themselves in their neighborhood and reclaim it for themselves. Jason also took me on a tour of their outreach ministries where local families can come to get food and clothing, as well as spiritual counseling. Katie, Drew, and I have also attended church there with Jason and Denise, where his father is the pastor. Jason informed me that they have never really had a school nurse there and informed me about some of the health issues. This is an area that would be very exciting and challenging to try to jump into if I were to stay here in Memphis. Since I am going into Med/Peds I hope there might be an opportunity to see the children at the school as well as their parents or the adults in the community. We will see how this works out in the future. But for now check out the Brinkley Heights website and see the difference that they are making in the lives of these children and in their neighborhood. You can find them by clicking this link to www.bhua.org.
