It's one thing to put something nasty on your feet, but quite another to put something nasty on your head. But how can you consider something that has been with you almost half your life nasty? I can't really remember when I got this Tigers hat, somewhere around 1998 I think. It had been with me through college and medical school. The DeAngelo and Wimprine era. The Calipari era. The New Orleans Bowl, the Motor City Bowl, the GMAC Bowl. The Pyramid, the FedEx Forum, the Liberty Bowl. CUSA championship games and the National Championship Game. This hat had been through a lot. Somewhere along the way it lost some of it's color. Then a lot of it's color. It actually started out as a Tiger blue, just like the new hat that replaced it about 6 months ago. Now it looks grey or even white. Actually I don't know what it looks like or where it is now, as it was the hat that infamously washed away in the Gulf of Mexico with my sunglasses a couple months ago. It was about time though. Somehow I clairvoyantly took these pictures below the day before we left for our trip. The hat had even grown stiff, so that I really only wore it to places like the beach. So now there is a new Tigers hat. It's not perfect and it's not the same as the old one. I wish the Tiger on the front of the new one was a little bit smaller, more like the old one. And I wish it said Memphis in the back instead of Tigers. But at least it's blue once again. And perhaps it will usher in a new era in Memphis football. It should also be noted that I threw away my old Wallabee's on Saturday, a sad day indeed.
