Relay for Life

The Madison County Relay for Life in Jackson has always been special for me. I was in college at Union when I first became involved with the American Cancer Society there, mostly doing volunteer work in their office or in the community when I first learned what Relay for Life was all about. Soon I had started a team with my fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, and was participating on the Relay committee to help put on the event. It has always been my home Relay. Last night the family went up to Jackson to return to the Relay there for the first time in three or four years. That means that this was my first time to attend Relay with my son, Drew. My parents were a little late and missed the survivor ceremony, but it was also the first time for me and mom to be at Relay together now that she is also a cancer survivor. I did not expect and could not get over the emotions that this night brought. It was so neat to be there and be honored as a cancer survivor as I held my own little miracle in my arms. And he was as sweet as could be, giving me a lot of hugs and kisses as well as our own special and loving head butts. He had a blast as well as he got to ride another train and ride on one of those swing rides that goes round and round. It was also great to see that Lambda Chi still has a team and has even built on what we started. They had t-shirts, a banner, and were selling food to raise money. It made me pretty proud to be there and see that they were still going strong, and they were even nice enough to give me a shirt-see below.

Happy Mother's Day to my mother and to the mother of my child. Thank you and I love you.

I had to add this picture that my friend who works at the American Cancer Society posted on FaceBook.
