It's a little past midnight. The pager of pain goes off indicating another admission has just hit the floor. A history is gathered and the exam is begun. It's a perfect storm of:
Crying baby
Monitor beeping
IV beeping
...and the pager starts going off
This was the scene sometime last week when I was on call. It was a trying time to say the least. Another fun experience was trying to talk to an Hispanic woman via the blue phone(the translation line) while her baby was crying into the receiver. But some do go smoothly.
One month is almost down. Only one call night left and I will have survived the first month. Next month I move over to the NICU where I will be on call every 4 nights(I have been on call every 5 nights this month). We'll see how that goes. The lack of sleep is already starting to catch up with me though.
