St. Louis 2012, Part 2

Saturday night on our trip we went to see the St. Louis Cardinals play against the Washington Nationals. We got there early to walk around and look around Busch Stadium. We were in the right field bleachers about 5 rows up and right next to the Cardinals bullpen. We got to watch their starting pitcher warm up. Also, Drew wanted a scorecard like Dad got, so we got him one and he ended up keeping score rather than me. The Cardinals had their best pitcher for the year, Kyle Lohse, starting the game, but he quickly gave up a grand slam in the top of the first. It actually hit right in front of us and we could hear the ball hit an advertisement sign, but it was difficult for the umps to tell if it went out or not. Carlos Beltran actually fielded the ball and threw the batter out trying to get back to first base. However, we had our first taste of instant replay and the call was reversed, giving the Nationals a 4-0 lead. Read all about it here in this Yahoo! article. Lohse pitched well after that and the Cardinals mounted a comeback, actually scoring in the bottom of the ninth to send it into extra innings. Unfortunately, the Nationals scored two in the top of the tenth to win the game. It was fun seeing the Nationals for the first time, seeing Bryce Harper, and of course the Cardinals. The best part was teaching Drew how to keep score at a baseball game, which is becoming a lost art these days. Allie had a good time too, especially as she assumed control of Drew's slushy drink. We gave her a taste but then she threw a fit when anyone tried to take it away from her so it just kind of became hers. Luckily Drew was very understanding and a good sharer. It such a great experience to get to take our family to see the Cardinals and get to teach them all about their rich history and the great game of baseball. One more St. Louis post to come.
