Our latest travel adventure started out with a trip to Atlanta last Sunday night. Katie found a deal on Expedia for a hotel there and we thought it would give us more time to look around in Greenville on Monday. We were a little worried at first because it was such a good deal, but the hotel was actually a great find. It was the Georgian Terrace and it was over 100 years old. It was also where Gone with the Wind premiered, and to top it off, our room was absolutely huge. So we woke up Monday and made the short two hour drive to Greenville, SC. We were able to check in and immediately headed down their quaint little Main Street to the jewel of the city-a river with a waterfall running right through downtown. We walked around there, walking over the falls via a bridge supported completely on one side only. Next we went to their minor league baseball stadium, which was only a couple years old. They are affiliated with the Red Sox, so their new stadium was built as a replica of Fenway, complete with a "Little Monster." Then we drove about 5 miles up to the campus of Furman University, home of the Paladins, which was also beautiful. We came back to Main St. to eat lunch at the Blue Ridge Brewery, where I tried some Carolina style BBQ and sampled some of their very own brews, which were quite good. Katie loved their homemade ketchup so much that we had to buy a bottle of it to bring home with us. We then rested at the hotel until it was time to go to dinner that night with a couple of the residents. They took us to a place called Smoke on the Water which was pretty good. We really enjoyed the resident who picked us up and his wife, they were great people and really made us feel welcomed. The next day I went to the hospital for the usual interview schedule while Katie soaked up some more local culture. The highlight of the interview was lunch with two more great residents, but an even better sweet potato cake at a place called the Brickstreet Cafe. I know sweet potato cake doesn't sound all that great, but one of the guys told me he didn't get it for six months because of the name and he regretted it because it doesn't taste like sweet potato at all. He was absolutely right and it was so very delicious. When the day was over Katie and I headed back home through the mountains, making the trip back in about 8 hours or so, while not stopping as much as Katie would have liked. All in all we loved the town and all the people we met there. Next up is East Carolina University in Greeneville, NC.
The first two pictures are in Atlanta. The rest are Greenville, with the last two being at Furman.
