Programming Note: There was no Day 3 at the St. Jude Classic for me. It was spent cleaning up the tree in my front yard with the help of Drew. He really was Daddy's little helper. He kept wanting me to cut branches for him to take to the curb too. The rest of the day I was over at my parent's house cleaning up their mess. The better part of two trees had fallen down, and one took down the neighbor's fence as we were trying to cut it down. So it was a long and exhausting day over there.
Day 4 was actually a little boring. I don't even have a little title for the day. They had planned for rain in the afternoon and tried to move the tee times up, but the rain came in the morning. After about a 4 hour delay that put the tee times back around where they would have been in the first place, we made it out there. We followed Phil around some more, but he continued to struggle. He hit a shot long on number 7, so he made his chip from right in front of us. Hopefully he will have a better go at this weekend at the US Open. We watched some of the groups around him and then took a seat at the 17th green after he passed through there.
We tried to watch all the leaders come through there, but with about 4 groups to go there was a long, long wait. Since Brian Gay was up by about 5 shots at that point we went ahead and left early. It was the first time I think I had left on a Sunday before a champion was crowned, but there was really no suspense left. I realized about halfway through the day that Gay was going to win this tournament wire-to-wire and I had not even seen him more than maybe once. So I watched him tee off from 13 as I got my final Pronto Pup. After the tournament we had a great night with old friends that we hadn't seen in a long time. We went swimming with them and Drew had a great time jumping in the pool with me catching him.
It was still a good year despite many battles including losing a title sponsor and the weather among others. It was great to have Mickelson here and Brian Gay was a great winner who is playing very well right now.
Here are a couple of great stories from the Commercial Appeal over the last week about the golf tournament:
