Congratulations President Obama. I am glad to have witnessed history yesterday, although I witnessed much less than I could have considering all of the coverage. I get it, at least some of it. I understand that he is the first African-American President. I get that he is young and hip, has a BlackBerry, uses YouTube to communicate with the people, and can dance on the Ellen show. I get that he is a great orator and a lot of what he says sounds pretty good. What I don't get is the adoration and reverence with which he is received. Since when did the American people look to a politician and the government to solve all of their problems instead of taking their situation and their lives into their own hands? I suppose you could answer that Obama is not the same type of politician that we have known before, although most of his appointments and actions so far would tell you otherwise. If George Bush's approval rating is in the 20's, couldn't anyone have beaten him? Couldn't they have just put Hillary, or Al Gore, or even John Kerry out there for a surefire victory? The press would have you believe that Obama had defeated McCain by about 50 million votes. The actual tally was more like 67 to 58 million in favor of Barack. While it was a large victory, there are still a lot of us out there that voted for McCain, although you would never know that from looking around.
And it is my generation that has fallen into this guy's act. It is scary to think what these people are being taught in college. And it has been very scary to see people's reactions and devotion to Obama on TV the past few days. I have never seen such hope put in one man before. The expectations are so high that I'm not sure that any man can succeed. I do wish him well. I will never talk of him the way the liberals have talked of and treated the latter President Bush. It has been disgraceful to see the way a man in the highest office has been treated by the media and the public. Like it or not he was still our President and that deserves your respect. I am proud that he held steadfast in his values even when it may not have been the popular route to take. I certainly hope history will view his Presidency in somewhat better light. I know that if we ever started to treat Obama the way W has been treated that the liberal media would be up in arms.
As for McCain, I guess Sarah Palin didn't pan out to be the genius pick that we all thought. She certainly worked for a while, but was ultimately too inexperienced when it mattered most. However, Saturday Night Live and Tina Fey certainly didn't do her any favors, as I'm sure more voters were more familiar with that portrayal than the actual woman. However, I can't help but show this picture of Cotton and Peggy from King of the Hill that I thought were pretty dead on caricatures of McCain and Palin, right down to the old war hero with no shins. It would have taken a mighty effort to overcome the nation's dislike of George Bush and the Republican Party right now, so I think Senator McCain performed valiantly considering the difficult circumstances. And I'm sure we will be seeing more of Governor Palin. The next 100 days and next four years should be interesting for sure. I'm sure there will be a lot of positive news stories on the economy and the war and such for the next little while so show what the Mighty Obama can accomplish in such a short time that W could not do. We will see how long that lasts and if Obama can continue to be a media darling throughout the trying times he is sure to face. For now, enough with the nonstop coverage, enough with the celebrities that we don't care about(especially not their political views), and on to more important things like the Super Bowl.
